De-dollarization maximalists cheering for BRICS mBridge don't understand basic monetary mechanics. Nobody wants to hold non-convertible currencies with capital controls as foreign exchange reserves. The US Dollar is an abusive partner, but the alternatives are economic hostage situations.

The true moat of the US Dollar is not morality or goodwill; it is the $28 Trillion US Treasury market. There is literally no other sovereign bond market deep and liquid enough to absorb global trade surpluses without catastrophic yield volatility.

Settlement currency ≠ Reserve currency. You can settle in bilateral currencies, but when you want to store value for 20 years, you still buy USD, Gold, or Swiss Francs.
