The courtesan was Thaïs from Athens. She convinced Alexander that burning Xerxes' palace was poetic revenge for the burning of the Acropolis 150 years earlier. Alexander woke up the next morning with a hangover and immediately regretted it, but the cedar wood roof had already collapsed.
